Tommy Vu, and the 2007 WSOP on ESPN
Wow, I had forgotten how awful 1-hour Final Table shows were until I watched tonights broadcast of the 2007 WSOP on ESPN. I have always hated these because there is never any play involved. It is always: Raise, All-In, Call–> Degree All In Moment. except of course the one hand that was played that had me completely baffled.
Three handed the button folds and the SB limps with Jd7d. The big blind, who happened to be the chip leader, (and who I could tell just from the hands I saw, had a history of calling people’s all-in bets pre-flop with mediocre hands) wakes up with QQ. He raises, and the limper moves all in which appeared to be about 1/3 of his opponents chips, maybe less.
J7 goes out in 3rd Place and as he is leaving he says: “I thought you were trying to bully me” Ok, what if he was? is he really gonna lay down any hand there heads up after you saw him call 2 all in bets one with KT, and one with AT??? I have seen things like this happen at the $100 and $200 buy-in tournaments at my local casino, but at the World Series of Poker? Come on. Not that I am a perfect player and the pressure at that point is incredible i’m sure, but how do you just lose your mind like that? You have 2 people between you and a WSOP Bracelet and First Place Prize money, and you throw it all away with a J7. Now I don’t know what had transpired prior to that hand but to me, it just doesn’t make sense.
And how great was Tommy Vu. I remember seeing his infomercials as a kid. That guy is hilarious. Good luck at the tables
