Legalities of Poker vs. Pot
Poker and Pot are two extremely controversial issues that society deals with on a daily basis. Both has been around for a very long time, and neither has ever been a significant drain on society as many lawmakers, politicians, and teachers would have you think.
Pot: Marijuana is a drug. It is recognized as a controlled substance and is illegal in the US to use it recreationally, but for some reason alcohol (which has arguably more intense effects on the brain and motor functions) is perfectly legal. The government taxes it, and makes money.
When alcohol was made illegal during prohibition, people still made, sold, and consumed it. The law wasn’t going to stop people from doing what they wanted to do, as long as it was available to them.
Poker: Poker is a game. There is a great debate whether it is a skill game or just a gambling game of chance. Those hip to the game know the answer to that. Poker itself as a game is legal. In some states however, playing it is not. There are actually recent stories of home games getting busted up by the police. Not underground card clubs, Home Games.
For some reason we are allowed to play Poker only where the government says we can. In the Casinos in the states that allow it. You can play as much as you want until you run out of money, and they could care less.
BUT…………..
What if you live out in the boonies 40 mins from the nearest town, and hours away from the nearest legal Casino? What are you going to do to get your Poker fix? Nothing. That is what the UIGEA is telling us. The government is telling you that you CAN NOT PLAY online poker if you live in the US.
…or at least, they are trying to tell you that. But the next commercial on TV is for the Daily State Lottery Numbers.
Are they serious? Who has the right to tell a person they can’t enjoy one of their favorite games from the comfort of their own home, with no hassles of slow dealers, loud noise, watered down drinks, and dirty casino chips? Not them, not me, not anyone.
Online Poker isn’t going anywhere as long as rooms like Full Tilt, Pokerstars, and Cake Poker continue allowing US players to do what they have a right to do with their own money.
So why are Poker and Pot kind of illegal? Are they dangerous? Anything is dangerous in excessive amounts, but let’s be serious: I can think of quite a few things that are legal, that are more dangerous than both of them.
Alcohol is to Pot, as Lottery is to Poker. None of them are going anywhere anytime soon. So roll up, fire up the computer, and enjoy.
