The competition at the 180-man SNG tournaments on Pokerstars has gotten better over the last year or so that I have been playing in them. I play the $20+$2 ones because I love the fact that you can make $1000 in about 4 hours time. These are a great value for a low-roller* like myself’s bankroll. *(low roller meaning $1-2, $2-5 NL and $20-$100 SNG and MTTs, not talking micro-limits or anything here).

These tournaments are a great value because they are a great stepping-stone to larger multi table tournaments. They allow you to practice the middle rounds of a MTT which is something you just can’t get playing regular 1-table SNG’s. The only way to gain experience in the situations that come up in the middle to late rounds of MTT’s is to play in them. Harrington’s books are incredible for learning the concepts and plays, but there is no way to truly understand some of the intricate concepts in those incredible books, is to experience them first-hand.

Pokerstars runs these tournaments as Sit N Go’s, so they start whenever they fill up which is usually pretty quick. There are four buy-in options with $4+ $.40, $10+$1, and $20+2. First Place in the $22 dollar one will score you a nice $1k payday.

If you play tight solid poker for the first hour, you are usually looking at half the field being gone before the first break.

Beginners Guide to 180-man Tournaments on Pokerstars

Although it says it is for beginners, I got a lot out of reading it. I like how it breaks down each individual level of these tournaments. I’m not sure about the goal for your chipstack at the end of each level because this can be different every time you play, but I like that it tells you right about where you should be in chips.

The responses to the post lead to a very long thread of discussion of strategy. It is well worth the read. I have also added some of my favorite tournament books to the Recommended Reading section.
