This is a list of the Five biggest Poker Myths floating around regarding the game of Poker. Most people on the outside of the Poker Culture looking in, see it as a very glamorous game and lifestyle. In some instances this is true but in many, it is not.
Most Good Players play a Tight/Aggressive Style: False. ALL good players play in a style tailored win the most money possible from the opponents in each particular game they are in. This can mean playing “Rock of Gibraltar” tight at some points, and playing like a maniacal madman at others. “Whatever it takes to beat the table you are playing at” is the best style to play.
Major Tournament Players Buy In to Major Events with out-of-pocket Money: Some Do. But plenty of players on the Tournament Circuit are backed, including many well-known tournament pro’s. The truth is that to be a world-class player, you have to have no regard for money, whatsoever. This is a trait that helps these great players at the table when big money starts getting involved. They will generally make less mistakes because money doesn’t put as much pressure on them as it would a guy making $20,000/yr at a 9-5 job. Just ask the pro who allegedly won over $100k in a tournament that took 14 hours, and promptly took it to the biggest Pot-Limit Omaha game in the casino and lost it all in a matter of 90 minutes. Another reason many players are backed is that these they often carry this disregard for money away from the table where vices such as pit games, drugs, and women can deplete a bankroll in a hurry.
The claims of online “poker experts” in the hype-filled sales pages for their “systems” for winning at Poker: Mostly False. Some of these claims have me laughing out loud. There was even a Pay Per Click ad that I saw that claimed it would teach you to “Win every single time you play poker” Wow! Sounds exciting. Too bad it’s 100% impossible. No one wins every time, no one. I bet it isn’t even mathematically possible. These “experts” will try anything they can, including lying to get you to purchase their products. Don’t listen to them. There are plenty of free resources out there, including Poker-Speak.com that will help you become a winning player.
If You Move Up in Limits, You Will Win More Because There Are Not As Many Bad Players at the Higher Levels: False. At some point in our quest to move up to higher limits, we may get so fed up with awful players hitting miracle draws on us time and time again. The thinking is that at higher levels, it will be easier to bluff because more money is involved, and players will fold hands when they are supposed to.In reality, there is a shred of truth to this, but not for the reasons you may think. Yes players will be more easily bluffed when more money is involved, but at higher levels better players will read bluffs more often and will look you up if they think you are weak.
Also, just because it is a higher limit game doesn’t mean there aren’t bad players in it. It hurts the bankroll more when someone draws out on you for a $1,000 pot than a $100 pot. The truth is that if you can’t win at the lower limits, there is a very likely chance you will be unsuccessful at the higher limits. Master the level you play at currently, and when you feel you are ready to move up, do so gradually and find the best higher limit games. This gives you a better chance of success because the transition from one limit to the next can be a rocky one.
Professional Poker Would Be a Dream Job: Mostly False. Excluding the people who have won enough money to set them up for life with huge Tournament Scores, Professional Poker is a GRIND. It is not the luxurious lifestyle that you see on television. If you are good enough to be one of the few players that actually make a good living at this game then more power to you.
It is extremely hard to shove your whole stack in the middle on a bluff when it consists of your rent, utility, cable, and most importantly, your high-speed internet Bill Money. It is a lousy full-time job, but it can be a very nice supplemental income for your current job. Before jumping into Professional Poker full-time, I suggest you do your research and talk to as many pro players as you can, and then decide if it is for you.Good Luck at the Tables.
