The purpose of this blog is to discuss the trials and tribulations of a lower/middle-limit Multi-Table Tournament (MTT) player on the internet. I play mostly $10-$100 online MTT’s at a number of Poker Sites. My number one question is this:

How can these players be so bad???

We all make mistakes as players sometimes, but at these lower levels you can easily take advantage of the amount of players who don’t seem to care where their chips end up, as long as they go into the pot FAST

The proper strategy when your table is playing like a bunch of maniacs is to sit tight and wait for hands according to most Poker books. This is even more important at the early levels of the smaller buy-in MTT’s online.

There are two reasons for this:

1. You will get paid off when you make a hand

Many of the players you will be playing against early on in these just can’t wait to get their chips in the middle, no matter what they have. Staying tight and conservative will allow you to gain the most amount of chips when you do eventually double up.

2. These crazy players create what is called OVERLAY

The term overlay refers to the fact that in most of these lower buy-in MTT’s, by the first break half of the field is usually eliminated. This means that if you can last that first hour of say, a 600 person tournament, you are actually playing a 300 person tournament. All the buy-ins from the people already eliminated become DEAD MONEY. This is one thing that makes online tournaments more lucrative than live ones. (Aside from the number of hands that can be seen.

Next time I will provide a list of some of the tournaments I frequent during the week. These are money-makers and if played correctly can be a gold mine as far as mid-level MTT’s are concerned.
