Playing In the Blinds: Advice From a Pro
When playing in the blinds, it is important to remember some key concepts.
If you are sick of a guy on the button stealing your blinds, find a good spot, and re-raise him. If he is a habitual button raiser, and you re-raise his steal 1 in four times that he raises your blind, you will be making some money. Be careful however, that the guy you are making this play against is not a maniac who will call your re-raise with weak hands.
A button raiser may attack your blinds with hands as weak as a QT. Make sure they are capable of laying down a hand before you try going after them though.
Hand value also increases immensely when everyone has folded around to you in the small blind. Though you will be out of position if called, you should raise a large range of hands in this situation.
This is even more true when you are in the Big Blind, and the action folds around to the small blind, because if you raise and get called, you have will have position on your opponent.
A great play to make in the middle rounds of a tournament where you don’t anticipate the table breaking soon is this:
You are in the Big Blind and the action folds around to the small blind who limps in. You should usually raise here. The reasons are these:
- Even if you don’t have a hand, you could pick up the pot. Chances are, unless the Small Blind was trapping you, that he would have raised you if he had a real hand. This means that he is probably going to fold to your raise a good percentage of the time.
- You will probably get a walk(everyone folds to you in the BB) the next time this situation presents itself, because the SB will fear another raise from you if he limps again.
- You will know when the SB has a real hand. Once you let him know he can’t limp in that spot with anything, you can be sure he has a hand when he does limp.
Hopefully this will give you some insight on the intricacies of Blind Play in Hold ‘em. Use of this play will help you pick up some chips, and foster an aggressive image when it comes to Tournament Poker. Good Luck at the Tables.
