Slow Down, You Are Not Invincible
Sometimes when I have a big stack compared to the rest of the table in a cash game or tournament, I get a bad case of IBS. No I don’t mean the gastric problem that plagues thousands of poor individuals every day. I am talking about what I call “Invincible Bully Syndrome”
This kind of IBS can be much worse than the other kind, because it costs YOU money. When we find ourselves sitting on a huge stack of chips in a tournament or cash game, it is usually due to a combination of running good while playing well. Sometimes we are running REALLY well.
I am all about “playing the rush”, but it is important that we don’t do anything stupid to make that big stack become a medium or small stack.
NL is a totally different game when the stacks are deep. Several adjustments need to be made as hands have different values, and psychological factors play a larger part in the game.
Just because you have a large stack doesn’t mean you should be calling raises with an AT or a KJ. These are still trouble hands, moreso when the stacks are deep.
If you flop Top Pair, even with a great kicker you should usually be laying it down in the face of heavy action. Any hand that can give your top pair a ton of action will usually have you beat, unless you are playing against a maniac.
You are not invincible even though it may feel like it when the deck is hitting you in the head and you are playing your best. Learn to slow down and change gears sometimes. Pay attention to your table image. While you are playing, take a step back and analyze your play. Make sure you are not suffering from IBS.
