Starting Out in Online Poker: Part III – Choosing Your Game
Ok, so you have chosen a site and deposited to your Poker account. Now the question is what game(s) you should play.
Online Poker can be a bit intimidating for the beginning player, especially if you are used to only playing in a home game. The home game may have been fun, but now you have to mean business. There is an endless supply of money to be made online if you are a reasonably good poker player.
The fact that millions of people sign on to online poker sites every day should give you an idea of how much money there is for the taking. YOU are there to take it, so NO SLACKING.
Online play is VERY different than live play, with the main difference being that it only takes a click to bet or raise, instead of having to count out your chips and put them in the pot. This single fact makes the games more aggressive, and the prospect of bluffing much more prevalent.
You could have the worst poker face in the world, but no one can see you when you are online. This leads players to bluff more, a trap which you shouldn’t fall into. Remember, a call is just a click away also.
Most sites spread a wide variety of games for the entertainment of their players. One popular site even started offering real-money games of Ro-sham-bo. As a beginner or novice player you should generally stick to Limit hold ‘em or lower-level NL games.
If you are playing at first to clear you Bonus, you can’t beat playing Low-Limit Hold’em. Online you will be getting to see many more hands than in a live game, so clearing most bonuses is relatively easy if you play break-even Poker or better.
If you are just starting out and looking to learn No-Limit Hold ‘em, it is probably best if you start with SNG’s (single-table tournaments), until you have a good grasp of the fundamentals of NL. The reason is that in an SNG, you are only risking the fixed amount of the buy-in, as opposed to in a NL cash game where your whole stack is at risk at all times.
Don’t be afraid to experiment in order to find the game you feel most comfortable with. Although if you do too much experimenting your bankroll may suffer. It is best to learn one game at a time, and the best way to learn is from reading, discussing hands with fellow players, and of course playing.
