The Biggest Mistake Tournament Players Make
Playing in online multi-table tournaments is a great way to gain experience before entering a live event. Most of the low to medium buy-in MTTs online offer a great overlay which a good player can benefit from greatly. If you can survive the first hour the field is almost cut in half.
One of the biggest mistakes novice and intermediate tournament players make is not knowing when to lay down Top Pair or an Overpair.
One-pair hands are very tough to play, and if there is significant resistance from an opponent, there is a good chance he can beat your one-pair hand.
Yes, Aces are tough to lay down after a flop but if an opponent is willing to risk all of his chips, you should probably lay down your overpair.
Of course this is dependent upon the opponent you are playing against. Some opponents will bet their whole stack with any Top Pair. It is your job to figure out whether the opponent you are against, is that type of player.
This advice should also be reserved mostly for the middle to late stages of a tournament. The reason is that there are many poor players still around in the beginning levels just giving away chips.
The best part about playing online is that another game is just a click away, so I may be more likely to gamble against a poor player when I have top pair top kicker (TPTK) early on in a tournament. The players in the early rounds are too aggressive, and don’t know the correct way to play.
I will take TPTK all the way against one of these players early on in a tournament. Just be careful not to confuse a poor loose/aggressive player with a good player who is playing loose/aggressive.
If you find yourself facing a large raise or re-raise and all you hold is one pair, stop and think about the situation for a moment. Note who you are playing against–are they capable of making a big move on you? If the answer is no, or if you are playing against a straight-forward type of player, it is almost certain that your hand is beat.
Pick a better spot to get all your chips in the pot. Good Luck at the Tables.
