Some of you have probably heard of the Free Card Play in Hold ‘em. It is a play where you raise an opponents bet, to try and get them to check to you on the next betting round.

It is a good play for both limit and NL, however in NL if you use it at the wrong time, you run the risk of getting moved off your draw if you get check raised. You should usually only use this play against straightforward opponents, or when you think your opponent is weak.

If you are up against good opponents they may call your raise and bet again when a non-threatening turn card comes. The ideal to opponents to make the play against would be passive ones.

Also if you use the play too much, observant of opponents will pick up on it after a while. This is why you should also raise strong hands in position.

The way to get the money is to bet and raise. Never be a caller unless you are trapping, or want more players in the pot. When you bet and raise you give yourself two chances to win the pot: your opponent can fold, or you can showdown the best hand.

When you are calling, the only way you have of winning is having the best hand. Play a selectively aggressive game and when you do start to roll, don’t forget to take your foot off the gas every once in a while. Poker is a marathon, not a sprint.

Good Luck at the Tables.
