When Should You Slowplay?
To put it bluntly……Almost Never. The reasoning is simple. Slow playing gives your opponent a chance to draw out on you and beat your hand.
In certain situations such as if you were holding 77 on a K-7-2 rainbow board, then it would not be bad. The problem is that you still lose value from someone who has a King they are willing to call you down with, and you give a free two-out draw to a hand like 99.
You definitely should not be slowplaying on draw-heavy boards because many turn cards could either beat your hand or kill your action. Even in a heads-up pot, unless you are up against a super-aggressive opponent you know will bet your hand for you, but sometimes they make hands too when you give them free or cheap cards.
Another reason to seldom slowplay is that your opponent could pick up a draw on the turn that they feel tied to. I have seen many bad online players call off their whole stacks after turning the nut flush draw and getting moved in on.
Yes, if you are the player who has moved in on them you will obviously be taking the best of it if they do call you, but in a tournament you can’t buy back in just because some moron makes a horrible call and gets lucky on you. Once your chips are gone, you are done.
And you may walk away from the table thinking “wow, what an idiot…”, but you may be thinking that about the wrong person. Had you raised your strong hand when he bet into you on the flop, you would have taken it down right there, and you would still be in the tournament. Instead, you decided to slowplay and smooth call his flop bet in hopes of extracting more money from him on later streets.
Fine thinking unless the aforementioned happens, and he ends up stacking you because he got lucky. But you are the one who gave him the opportunity to “get lucky”
Unless you flop a monster, bet and raise your hands aggressively. Save the slowplaying for your first Royal Flush. For more articles like this, check out our Poker Strategy Section
