Zen and the Art of Poker by Larry Phillips
If you play Tournament Poker, this book is a MUST for you. The concepts put forth by author Larry Phillips are based in the beliefs of Buddhism, but you won’t find any talk of Religion in this book. What you will find is an incredible look into Poker Strategy from a point of view that you have probably never thought about.
The book focuses mainly on patience and calmness both while at the Poker table, and away from it. You can’t play good Poker without having the right attitude when going into each and every session.
The ideas include retreating when faced with resistance, timing your actions optimally, and extreme patience. Also discussed is how different levels aggression at the correct times can be extremely beneficial to throwing off your opponents. There is a whole chapter on Folding which may sound boring, but discussed ideas I had never even thought about.
It is nice when an author can open your eyes to a whole new way of thinking about something. The more we learn, the better our games become. A better game means a Bigger Bankroll, and who doesn’t want that? The main purpose of the book is controlling your emotions when you encounter the inevitable swings that you will endure while playing Poker. If you are a tournament player at any level, you can benefit greatly from reading this book. You can purchase it from Amazon in our Poker Books section.
