How to Win SNG’s
There are many situations that occur frequently when playing online 1-table tournaments (commonly known as “SNG’s”).
Having played a good amount of these over the years, and talking with some professional SNG players, I believe I have formulated a basic guideline for those who play in the $5-$50 range, which will no doubt increase your ROI (return on investment), as well as your ITM% (In the Money percentage).
Over the next week or so I will be sharing all of my knowledge about SNG’s with you the reader, so that hopefully you can increase your bankroll and move on to larger buy-in tournaments.
SNG’s are a great way to build a bankroll, and learn many of the fundamentals of general tournament play. They allow you to encounter many different situations that occur in tournament play, without much risk involved.
In a 1-table SNG, at these levels, there are usually going to be a few fish, a few break-even players, and 1 or 2 players beside yourself who actually know what they are doing.
In order to completely take advantage of your opponents’ weaknesses, you should use the first couple of orbits to figure out who is who at your table. It may not even take you that long to size up your opponents — good, you have more time to formulate a strategy to beat them.
You should be able to put a preliminary label on many of your opponents within the first couple of orbits. Are they loose/tight? Do they limp frequently? Are they aware of position? When anyone shows down a hand from any position you should make a note whether it be a mental note, or typed into their “Player Notes”.
It is not necessarily the specific hand that you are looking at, but what it tells you about their play:
- A guy that limps UTG and eventually shows down AA is probably a tricky player. He may play his big hands from behind and so forth.
- A guy who limps in UTG with a 67s probably has no concept of position, otherwise he would not have played the hand.
These are things to look at in the very beginning of an SNG. Stick to playing only premium hands, and observing your opponents tendencies very carefully.
Every time you see something, make a note, and ask yourself “What does that tell me about the way this guy plays?”
Next we will tackle starting hands and strategy for the early stages of an SNG.
